What is Myofunctional Therapy?
A Myofunctional Therapy program is specific to the individual, but the goal is always the same, help the body to return to function as it was designed to by creating healthy oral habits. These habits include, constant lip seal and nasal breathing, correct tongue posture at rest, and a correct swallow pattern.

-
Lips closed

-
Tongue on roof of the mouth

-
Nasal Breathing

-
Correct swallow pattern

The program targets specific muscles in the face and mouth to accomplish these goals and retrain the body. Myofunctional Therapy has been shown to be greatly beneficial for people struggling with Obstructive Sleep Apnea, TMJ disorders, tongue thrusting, orthodontic relapse, and so much more. It is also proven effective at helping shape development of the face, jaw and airway in children.

Myofunctional therapy does not only include exercises. We will evaluate function as well as structure of the tissues in the mouth in order to understand what needs to be done to achieve optimal results. Tongue tie or lack of tongue space are a few structural aspects that we will screen for and may refer you to an airway centric Dentist, Orthodontist, or ENT to get them taken care of. When working with me I will help you find well trained and qualified providers in your area should a referral be necessary.

The main focus of Myofunctional Therapy is the airway. Breathing is essential to life, and the way that we breathe is extremely important. Nasal breathing offers many benefits that mouth breathing does not. Some of these benefits are: superior oxygenation, air filtration, production of nitric oxide and regulation of the nervous system.
